Mission

SPNL aims to protect nature, birds and biodiversity of Lebanon for people and to ensure sustainable use of natural resources.

Description

SPNL is one of the oldest environmental NGOs in Lebanon, founded in 1986. It is the national partner for BirdLife International in Lebanon. Furthermore, SPNL is the first IUCN member from Lebanon, a member in the MedForum, founding member in the MedWet NGO Network, founding member of the Lebanese Environment Forum; and accredited by UNEP. SPNL considers birds as entry points for the conservation of wider natural resources, as they act as key indicators of the status and health of ecosystems.
Ever since its establishment in 1986, SPNL advocated the establishment of protected areas and initiated with the Ministry of Environment the protected areas in Lebanon, and helped in managing the Al Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve. After twenty years of experience working with nature reserves through government agencies, and with the rising issues at the local, national and international levels for co-management of natural resources, and the challenges facing local communities and the protection of private lands, SPNL is now reviving and advocating the Hima practice-Community based conservation. SPNL already revived two Himas in Lebanon during the last two years; namely Ebel es-Saqi in South Lebanon, and Kfar Zabad Wetland in Bekaa region.
